nuclear power plant

The council convinced the people that the power plant was for the benefit of the town, generating enough for everyone and a ridiculously low price.

Everyone thought it was for the best so they voted for the construction of the power plant.

When the power plant was ready, everyone rejoiced because it did the job the council promised.

It was not until the plants surrounding the plant gradually receded – fading from green to brown to finally black – that the townspeople realised something was wrong.

Still, the council assured the townspeople that the plant was working fine.

By the time everyone discovered something was indeed wrong, it was too late – the plant exploded, killing plants and people indiscriminately.

He told her that her feelings reached his heart and tugged his heartstrings, that he had never been so moved before.

All the promises he made to her under the moon.

So she decided they should fulfill those promises he made when she discovered the kind of person he was after a few months.

She reached for his heart and tore it out before moving his corpse to the edge of the mountain and threw it off.

He was right.

He would die before he could hurt her feelings and she made sure of that when she found him cheating on her with her best friend.

The crystal was supposed to absorb negativity, or so said the lady from whom she bought the crystal.

Instead of absorbing negativity, the crystal was steadily losing its original dark purple and turning white, then colourless.

She herself had not experienced any changes in her life.

So she chucked it one side, dismissing its potency as hokum.

However, the lady who sold her the crystal forgot to tell her to return the crystal for a re-charge before it turned completely clear.

It was too late when the lady remembered, for the owner was crushed to death from a falling statue when she was jogging in a park.

Everyone was surprised by the old man’s proclamation – that werewolves existed and they would come hunting that night.

At first, the villagers laughed at his ludicrous speech; after all, werewolves belonged to fragments of fairy tales and even if they did exist, werewolves would only show themselves during full moon.

Then they laughed no more.

That night, a pack of them lopped into the village, killing half the livestock and abducted a few young maidens.

They started to take him seriously and deferred to his every word and acted according to his wishes and paid him for his services and used his inventions.

If only they knew all the werewolves were created by the old man’s design.

adult business desk document

He did not think much of the note when he first found it in his to-do notebook, only that it was a prank: then the second, third and fourth note came.

He thought he was getting paranoid so he went overseas to a private holiday home guarded by ex-military soldiers to take his mind off things.

He found the fifth note when he woke up that morning and immediately got sick – it was a Post-It on his forehead.

The guards at the holiday home were stumped as there was no suspicious movements and they had covered all possible routes so they decided the best course of action was to stay with the man that night, in the living room as he hid in his bedroom.

All was well until the next morning, when they heard the man gave a surprised shout followed by a heavy thump.

When they rushed into his room, the man was already lying dead on the ground, with a note in his hand that said, “Today’s your last day.”

To be honest, I had no idea where this story was heading, until I suddenly remember a short tale “An Appointment in Samarra”, as retold by W Somerset Maugham. Some of you might be familiar with this story in the popular BBC’s Sherlock.

Rejection

I refuse the refuse you threw in my way.

I am not interested.

Your attempts to antagonise me for your sadistic purposes will not work.

I am my own man.

And I will not fall.

Not now, not today, not ever.

Northern Cardinal

The cardinal is on red alert now, searching for scarce supply of winter food. Its red appearance stands out against the white snowscape like a ripe strawberry waiting to be plucked.

Against all odds, the redbird survived.

But will it survive to see another day? The redbird does not burden itself with worries of the future. The worries of present is enough at the moment.

His frustration was all time high; first there was a confirmation code, then there was a re-captcha, and next was the OTP – One-Time Password – before the final test, his actual password.

He could not remember.

There were simple too many passwords to too many accounts, from social ones to productivity ones to business ones.

The fingerprint lock was possibly the best invention that ever happened to him, since all his passwords were protected by forgetfulness.

He gave up and click on “Forgot Password”, something he had been clicking on too many times these days before he paused.

What was his account ID?

I don’t know if any of you have this problem, but these days, I found myself unable to remember the passwords, sometimes, even the account ID. Then there were times I went to a website to register, only for the website to go “Tsk tsk tsk, you have registered this email with us. Come on man, try to remember.”

I could easily write it all down on a notebook but I have already established the fact that I am paranoid. Also, I have once done that and then proceeded to lose the said book…

Sunday’s Six Sentence Story Word Prompt!

Char Kway Teow (Singapore food delight) | Image from  Wikimedia Commons

He has had a strong desire for some Singaporean fare for a long time, especially for char kway teow – ooh, that sweet and savoury flat noodles made from rice and stir-fried with fish cakes, eggs, vegetables, bean sprouts, sauteed pork, prawns and cockles.

Working overseas for so many years, he misses that fragrance.

And keeping in contact with his friends on Facebook is not helping either, since they are all foodies.

He raises an eyebrow when he sees an email coming in and his heart skips a beat – it is a common knowledge that the company has not fared well for a long time.

Notice of termination.

Oh well, it is a good time as any to return to Singapore for a plate of char kway teow.

In spirit of Singapore’s National Day (9 August, by the way, which is a long holiday I’ve been looking forward to forever), I decided to demonstrate my love for my country. And what is better than showcasing one of our favourite food in Singapore?

I always feel that writing about Singapore is difficult because not many people abroad really know who we are and our mangled use of language does not really help. The only thing most people know about Singapore is probably when Donald Trump accused us of stealing jobs from Americans. Or that we are always ready to whip anyone who commits a crime since the Michael Fay incident and the German vandalism ( Andreas Von Knorre and Elton Hinz) incidents.

But let me steer clear from governmental politics and introduce something that unifies many people – food. We share many similarities with Malaysia and Indonesia, although the culinary sense varies and sometimes, even from state to state with Malaysia or Indonesia.

But char kway teow is so mangled, just like our use of language, that I truly believe an authentic dish of char kway teow can never be found anywhere else.

Do not ask me about Singapore noodles. I have absolutely no idea which bright spark came up with that. Or how it made into Robert Galbraith’s (JK Rowling) novels. Twice. *roll eyes*
