I think we all need hope every now and then. Personally, this image conjures up an idea of horrid routine, but things change if I believe enough in myself. It’s best not to complicate things at times.

Weekend Writing Prompt #116 – Amateur

The Art of War

“No, I’m not using mobile phone!” the student protested when his teacher asked for his phone.

“Take out all your books from the drawer.”

“See? Nothing!” he replied triumphantly.

From a thick reference book, his teacher pulled out the phone. “And your watch too.”

The student grudgingly surrendered his gadgets.

“Amateur.”

(51 words)

Oh, the games I play with my students. I swear they think I’m an idiot, not realising that sometimes, I just don’t say anything to their using of mobile phones.

If you are interested, the prompt is linked below.

The challenge is simple: each week you will be given an exact number of words you can use to write a poem or piece of prose.  You can use any format or style you like; go wherever your inspiration takes you.  The only rules are these:

  • your poem / prose must contain this week’s word.  The word does not have to count towards the exact word count total – it can be in the title, or the first letters of the lines of a poem can spell it out – you can be as creative as you want as long as it’s there somewhere.
  • the length of your poem / prose must match the number of words stated in this week’s challenge.  No more.  No less.

I believe Susi really outdo herself this time with the image prompt. This really got my gears moving (pun? pun-ish?) and I came up with two senryuu. It sounds rough and the meters seem a little off, but I like it.

#13? Has it been 13 weeks of Scintillating Saturdays? Where did the time go?

But I love the orange and the blue of the sky, especially sunset in the evening when purple is in the mix too. Such natural sights simply take my troubles away…

* inspired by William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience

When I first studied Blake’s poems in my university days, I could not figure out what was going on in his poems. Now, I think I have a better appreciation of his words. With age comes experience, I supposed.

Perfect Paint Product

I looked at the botched paint job. I could have hired professionals but I insisted on doing it myself. I started scrapping away at the paint and started sobbing.

“What are you doing, son?”

“That was a lousy paint job and I just want to repaint it!”

He frowned as he processed my blubbering. “You want to repaint the entire wall because of that small mistake? Besides, the table goes there and it will cover up that section.”

“I want a perfect job! I just can’t let it go!”

He stared at me for a moment. “Can’t? Or won’t?”

(99 words)

I’m always a bit of a perfectionist, to the point of obsession when I would rather not start on a project for fear of not doing a fantastic job. I would not say I have outgrown that tendency but I think I am starting to cope with it better.

I would backslide every now and then, especially in my work when I’m preparing teaching materials for my class. That gives me unnecessary stress as I become overly hard on myself and I would just break down.

I really need to learn not to be a perfectionist and let things go at times…

Mars and Venus

“Go straight down, second shelf, she said,” I muttered. “You can’t miss it. Well, I’m missing it somehow.”

I scrutinised the shelves in front of me. Still, I could not find the book.

“I don’t see it!”

“It’s right there! The second shelf!” she yelled back.

“I am looking at the second shelf,” I yelled again. “It’s not there,” I stressed every word.

Ominous pitter-patter of slippers sounded as she turned the corner and walked toward me, glaring me down the entire time. Reaching into the shelf, she pulled out the book.

“It’s. Right. There.” She said through clenched teeth.

(100 words)

Silly me forgot to follow Bikurgurl and continue with 100-word writing prompts. Took me a few weeks to realise I seem to be missing some challenges. Well, at least I gave a follow so hopefully, I’ll be able to do it regularly!

Anyway, this is born out from all those childhood days my mother almost assassinated me whenever I’m looking for something but couldn’t find it. Then she would come, voila! she found it within seconds and shoved it in my face, saying coolly “Tell me. What’s this?”

I love my mother, I really do. But she is downright scary whenever she does that.

I Write Her Weekly Haiku/Senryu Challenge #19 – 2nd Attempt

Music

sonorous rhythm

rhythmic melody
releases my tired soul through
melodious rhythm

This is the original haiku I wrote. If I have to confess, I prefer the original one rather than the one in second attempt because of the mirror parallel – I’m a big sucker for it. But at least, after a couple of friends pointed out that the last line contains 6 syllables rather than 5, I’m glad to announce “rhythm” is generally accepted as 2-syllable word 😀

Back story: my mind is in the gutter these days and I’m too tired to even figure out the number of syllables in a word. And this is also when howmanysyllables.com failed me because it listed “rhythm” as 1-syllable word…

I Write Her Weekly Haiku/Senryu Challenge #19

Music

Music is my life.

That was my original line for this haiku but it somehow lacks that poetic sense to my ears. But music has been a big part of my life, whether I am playing the piano, singing songs or listening to music on my iPod. And most importantly, I store my memories in music as well, as each piece contains a certain memory, a small piece of my life.

This one takes quite some time because I was deciding how many syllables there are in “rhythmic” and “rhythm”. In the end, it occurs to me, there are so many syllable counting websites out there I could have just log in to one of the sites. They all agree on the number of syllables and I heave a sigh of relief.
