FOWC with Fandango — Scratch

Scratch. Scratch. Scratch.

There it was again, the scratching sound.

Charlie had almost gone crazy turning the whole house upside down but he simply could not find the source of that annoying sound.

“Yes, I hear the scratching sound too, but I have checked everywhere thoroughly and as far as I can tell, Mr Boyd, there is no pest infestation,” the contractor told him. “You’re spending unnecessary money to hire me and honestly, I’m starting to feel guilty coming here for the fourth time only to assure you there are no pests.”

“Thank you for that,” Charlie replied but the sarcasm was lost on the contractor.

That was three weeks ago.

There had not been any improvement. In fact, the scratching only got worse, as if in retaliation to his efforts of ridding it.

But each time he got closer to the source of the scratching sound, it mysteriously stopped, like it knew what Charlie was doing.

He gave up, switched off the lights and went to bed.

Scratch. Scratch. Scratch.

Almost immediately, he sat up and turned on the lights. Nothing.

Scratch. Scratch. Scratch.

He stood up and slowly got closer to where the sound was coming from.

Scratch. Scratch. Scratch.

The lights flickered and went dark.

Charlie’s shout of surprise ended abruptly.

Scratch. Scratch. Scratch.

Then dead silence.
