Hmm, how many times do I listen carefully to the music around me? As in, really listen carefully? I only noticed it when I am forced to still my mind, the sounds of birds, bugs rustling leaves and squirrels. And many others which I have yet to identify…

Aerial Dance

Months of intensive training have finally led to this chance of a dazzling aerial show and he is determined not to mess things up.

The difference between success and failure is the ability to hold the wheel in face of stressful times.

He messes up.

Aerial shows fascinate me, but I could not help but wonder, at what price are the pilots paying to produce such shows? I could not even drive a car properly, much less fly a jet in such close proximity to another…

If you are interested, the prompt is linked below.

You’ll find full guidelines on the TLT page – here’s the tl;dr:

Crimson’s Creative Challenge #35

The Treasure at the End of the Rainbow

“…and at the end of the rainbow, you’ll find the pot of gold, they said,” he muttered as he trudged along the path, hoisting the baggage over his shoulder. “That’s where the pot of gold is buried, they said.”

He paused in his steps, shifted the baggage to the other shoulder and looked at the sky. “Can’t the legend have that pot of gold buried under some tree or better still, have it sunk to the bottom of the ocean?”

He sighed and stared ahead of him. The dirt track appeared never-ending; he would never reach the end of the rainbow!

He heaved an even bigger sigh and continued his journey.

“Well, at least if I can’t reach the end of the rainbow and bury this stupid pot of gold, the humans definitely can’t reach the end of the rainbow too,” the leprechaun grumbled as he continued his journey.

(149 words)

Hahaha, just a silly story that popped into my mind when I saw this image. I remember I could not understand why there would be a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Living in a tropical island, it is rather common to see rainbow since we have frequent cloudbursts and unpredictable rains. But the rainbow never quite stretches from one end to the other end; instead, the rainbow just truncates halfway across the sky, as if a child got bored of shading the seven colours and just went “That’s it, this is good enough.”

I guess this is my way of explaining the legend. Or mansplaining the legend. Or complaining. LOL.

If you are interested, the prompt is linked below.

Here’s how it works:

Every Wednesday I post a photo (this week it’s that one above.)
You respond with something CREATIVE

Here are some suggestions:

  • An answering photo
  • A cartoon
  • A joke
  • A caption
  • An anecdote
  • A short story (flash fiction)
  • A poem
  • A newly minted proverb, adage or saying
  • An essay
  • A song—the lyrics or the performance

You have plenty of scope and only two criteria:

  • Your creative offering is indeed yours
  • Your writing is kept to 150 words or less

If you post a link in the comments section of this post I’ll be able to find it
If you include Crimson’s Creative Challenge as a heading, WP Search will find it (theory)
by ‘Searching’ in the WP Reader (fingers crossed)

Friday Fictioneers – 12 JULY 2019

PHOTO PROMPT © Dale Rogerson

Inter-galactic Charging Station

We chanted our slogan as we held our placards and formed a picket line around the charging point.

Ever since we made contact with that alien civilisation, those leeches had turned our planet into their personal energy station; they sent their inter-galactic power bank spaceships to our planet, charged and returned to their planet, leaving us with nothing.

They preached environmental protection to us because they had destroyed their home planet’s environment. But they continued in their errors, except they made us pay for it.

We would not stand for this; time to say “No!” to homo sapiens’ paradoxical practices!

(100 words)

What’s the fun of writing aliens come to us? I thought a perspective from “the other side” might be interesting.

On a more serious note though, when are we going to learn that our current practice of exploiting our planet is not going to last?

100 Word Wednesday: Week 128

Great Escape

After hearing tragic screams of the first brave cyclist, the remaining survivors gathered at the entrance of the tunnel to formulate a plan.

“What if we light a fire at the entrance?” someone suggested.

“Don’t be silly. Are we trying to draw it out or keep it in?”

“Well, I’ve seen the creature flirting with a campfire before. It likes fire.”

“Are you willing to risk the safety of the children?”

A loud belch from the tunnel answered their question.

It seemed escape was impossible with the dragon guarding the only tunnel leading in and out of the town.

(99 words)

For some reason, tunnels always bring out the worst imagination in me. I have imagined it collapsing, filled with imaginary creatures like zombies, dragons or aliens, leading into another dimension or trapping people forever without any way out.

I should really stop thinking about such silly fantasies.

Secret Recipe

“Really, that’s my salad’s recipe!”

“Oh, you expect us to believe that? Fried baby toes and fingers?” she sipped an aged man’s blood. AB negative, her favourite.

“Fine. Also, some virgin women’s skin flakes.”

The human-like demons in the room nodded at the revelation of her words.

(278 characters)

I’m binge-watching Supernatural lately and this just comes to me. I think the more normal a situation is, the more shocking it becomes when you understand the horrifying demonic elements.

Or maybe my imagination is in overdrive and I’m just seeing horrors everywhere.

If you are interested, the prompt is linked below.

About the challenge: Each Tuesday I will provide a photo prompt. Your mission, if you choose to accept the challenge, is to tell a story in 280 characters or less. When you write your tale, be sure to let me know in the comments with a link to your tale. This is important as I have noticed that some of the ping backs have not been working. If you would prefer to post your tale in the comments (some people have very specific blog themes but still want to participate), I am happy to post a link to your site when I post your tale in the Round Up.

100 Word Wednesday: Week 127

“It’s interesting how things turn out,” she continued. “You killed me and now, I came back as your guide to the next world.”

“So a revenge, is that it?” I challenged, my voice unrepentant. “Making sure I’ll dead?”

Her eyes rolled. “Men!” Staring straight into my eyes, she continued. “That choice is yours alone, as a prisoner of your own body or to cross over the ocean.”

Silence reigned.

She glanced at the sparkler in her hands and smiled. “Remember your last words to me? Now let me repeat them back at you. Your time is running out.”

(98 words)

I love the idea of karma, although we do not see it in real life action. But wouldn’t it be a shocking, at your death bed, to see someone you killed giving you an impossible choice?

As you may have suspected, I’m a vengeful kind of person. LOL

Three Line Tales, Week 179

three line tales, week 179: a castle in a lake

photo by Richard Clark via Unsplash

The castle guards its secrets; there is no way of entering or exiting as the castle stands alone in the middle of the lake.

Dying to find out the mystery of this impossible construct, generation after generation expends futile efforts to understand the castle.

And generation after generation of the alien race living at the bottom of the lake praises the wisdom of their ancestors.

When you want to hide things, you hide it in plain sight. When I saw this image, what attracts my attention is not the castle but the waters. Such magical qualities of the waters must speak for themselves!

After all, we have heard of Lady of the Lake, so why not Aliens of the Lake?
